PRESS RELEASE
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: March 12, 2020
Salt Lake City, UT – Following debate and passage of SB 174, Abortion Prohibition Amendments, in the Legislature, Lauren Simpson, policy director for Alliance for a Better Utah, issued the following statement:
“It was made clear today during debate that, should this bill go into effect, it would result in the death of some Utah women. This bill could result in a woman who seeks medical care following a botched abortion being sentenced to 15 years in prison.”
“This bill is bad for women, it’s bad for kids, and it’s bad for families. Utah already has over 30 restrictions on abortion and 80 percent of Utahns do not want more restrictions. People understand that abortion is a deeply personal and complex decision that a woman makes in consultation with her family, faith, and doctor. We hope Governor Herbert will make the measured decision to veto this dangerous and extreme bill.”
