What Happened With Bears Ears and Grand Staircase-Escalante?
On July 13th, President Trump signed two executive orders to shrink Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument by around 90%, and Bears Ears National Monument by 91%. He was joined by Governor Spencer Cox, Utah House Speaker Mike Schultz, & Utah’s Congressional delegation.
In addition to being ecologically diverse landscapes with significant paleontological and scientific value, these monuments are also the ancestral homelands and living cultural history for many regional Tribes.
The Bears Ears Inter-Tribal Coalition
is comprised of the Navajo Nation, the Hopi Tribe, the Pueblo of Zuni, the Ute Mountain Ute Tribe, and Ute Indian Tribe.
The Grand Staircase-Escalante Inter-Tribal Coalition includes the Hopi Tribe, the Navajo Nation, the Kaibab Band of Paiute Indians, the Paiute Indian Tribe of Utah, the Ute Mountain Ute Tribe, and the Zuni Tribe.
Zero tribal coalitions were consulted prior to this decision being made.
Stripping protections for these national monuments puts ancestral lands, cultural resources, habitats, animals, clean water, outdoor recreation access, and local economies and communities at immediate risk.
