The Week in Letters: Pickleball puns and Cesar Chavez

Pickleball puns, Obama’s Cesar Chavez-style communism and firearm safety in this week’s Letters to the Editor from newspapers across the great state of Utah.

SLC is going too far with pickleball

Salt Lake City’s move to sweep tennis off the public courts and replace it with pickleball is a bad dill. Without any public conversation, the city is restriping and lowering nets on courts around town to make way for a sport with an unproven track record (“Pickleball goes outdoors in Salt Lake City,” Tribune, July 19, 2012).

A test court or two may make sense to gauge public interest in pickleball, but conversion of dozens of popular tennis courts all at once is not in the best interest of tennis fans, young and old. Parks and Recreation is behind this effort. Lob an email to them at parks@slcgov.com and hit a passing shot to your City Council member at council.comments@slcgov.com to let them know how you feel.

Reader questions Chavez’s legacy

March 31, is the birthday of the late Cesar Chavez, founder of the United Farm Workers Union. California Democrats made it a state holiday, nine other states made it a commemorative day, and a movie is coming soon.

But few know who Chavez was or who is behind these efforts to lionize him as an icon for Hispanics.

Chavez worked with the Communist Party USA (CPUSA) and Democratic Socialists of America his entire life, and was trained by Saul Alinsky, the Chicago godfather of “community organizing.”

Not surprisingly, Barack Obama wanted Chavez’s birthday to be a national holiday.

Securing firearms

It is absolutely despicable that a young child would be able to access his or her parents’ weapons. Those who keep guns in their home need to make absolutely sure that there can be no potential for these tragic accidents to occur.

Any gun owner who is unable to secure their firearms safely needs to have them revoked completely. There need to be stricter certifications for people to own guns so that we do not have such awful occurrences.

President ‘damned if he does, damned if he doesn’t’

This president is damned if he does, and damned if he doesn’t, in the eyes of these right-wing haters and subversive individuals. The only thing this is doing is playing into the hands of the Russian leader, instead of standing by our leaders and our president because of the racist hate, jealousy, envy and disdain they have for him. To this I say, God bless America, because if it ever needed it, now is the time with these subversive haters.
