Press Release: Impeachment will test the integrity of Utah’s senators

PRESS RELEASE
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: January 16, 2020

Salt Lake City, UT – As the impeachment trial begins this morning in the United States Senate, Chase Thomas, executive director of Alliance for a Better Utah, issued the following statement:

“Most often we think of senators as part of the lawmaking process, but we also elect senators to act as a constitutional check on the executive branch. As disturbing evidence continues to emerge, we expect our state’s senators to use their outsized influence to ensure a fair trial and make sure all the facts are heard, including the calling of witnesses, if necessary.

“As they take their oaths today to dispense ‘impartial justice,’ Senators Romney and Lee are being watched by Utahns across the state who share the common value of holding true to our commitments, even when it’s hard or everyone around you is doing the opposite. We hope that not only will the integrity of our government institutions hold strong during this turbulent time, but that the integrity of our elected officials will also endure.”
