BETTER UTAH CALLS ON SENATOR LEE TO “GET OUT OF THE WAY” OF GUN REFORM

Salt Lake City, UT – As Congress considers bipartisan legislation that would close gaps in criminal records covered by federal background checks, Senator Mike Lee (R-Utah) is reportedly holding up the process by blocking expedited consideration of the bill.

In response, Katie Matheson, communications director of the Alliance for a Better Utah, issued the following statement:

“Mike Lee is using a procedural tactic to delay expedited progress on bipartisan gun legislation that has been decades in coming. His stated purpose in doing so is to protect against an unintended consequence that he feels could ensnare former military personnel in the bill’s language. Letting the perfect get in the way of the good is a disastrous way to legislate and certainly didn’t stop Senator Lee and his colleagues from voting on an anything-but-perfect tax cut bill.  We have an historic opportunity to effect bipartisan gun legislation, without infringement on the Second Amendment. Senator Lee should withdraw his opposition and let this legislation pass with all due speed.”
