Press Conference at Salt Lake City Cemetery to Address Campaign Lies

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Thursday, October 25, 2012

Media Advisory – Press Conference (Friday, October 26) to Call for End to Campaign Lies

———

Who: Maryann Martindale, Alliance for a Better UTAH
Senator Patricia Jones, Minority Whip
Representative Carol Spackman Moss

What: Utah legislators join Alliance for a Better UTAH in calling for an end to the use of dishonest and intentionally misleading campaign materials.

Democrats and republicans agree that campaign materials should be rooted in the truth. But intentionally misleading and dishonest campaigning has reached staggering heights in Utah state legislative and local races.

In a June 27 Deseret News article, Thomas Wright, Chairman of the Utah GOP, said: “It’s the damage it does to the system.” He continued: “It’s not OK when it crosses the line and everybody knows where that line is….I encourage all candidates, Republican, Democratic, independent, to run clean, positive and productive campaigns and make Americans proud to vote.”

Jim Dabakis, Chairman of the Utah Democratic Party, said: “All the serious discussion of issues gets drowned out by the noise of dishonest and misleading campaign materials.”

Where: Salt Lake City Cemetery, Corner of 11th Avenue and Center Street

When: Friday, October 26, 11:00 a.m.

Why: Healthy disagreement is the hallmark of good campaigning, but it shouldn’t be at the expense of truth. Utahns deserve campaign information they can trust.
