Local legislative debates announced

Salt Lake City — Finding solid electoral information is hard enough for national races, it can be nearly impossible for local races. A Utah non-profit is trying to change that.

The ABU Education Fund, an affiliate of the Alliance for a Better UTAH, announced today it is joining with the University of Utah’s John R. Park Debate Society and community radio station KCPW to host a series of debates ahead of the 2014 midterm elections.

The debate schedule is as follows (candidates are listed in alphabetic order):

Salt Lake County Council, at-large seat
Micah Bruner and Jenny Wilson
September 16, 2014, 7PM – 8PM
The Leonardo, 209 East 500 South, Salt Lake City

House District 30
Fred Cox and Mike Lee
September 23, 2014, 7PM – 8PM
West Valley City Library, 2880 West 3650 South, West Valley City

Senate District 4
Jani Iwamoto and Sabrina Peterson
October 7, 2014, 7PM – 8PM
Holladay City Hall, Big Cottonwood Room, 4580 South 2300 East, Holladay

Maryann Martindale, executive director of Alliance for a Better UTAH, made the following comment ahead of the planned debates:

“Political debate is the cornerstone of a robust democracy. These debates will contribute to the continued improvement of local democracy here in Utah by ensuring that candidates have a fair, free and open platform for discussing their views in front of their constituents.”
