BETTER UTAH WELCOMES BYU PUBLIC SERVICE FELLOW
Salt Lake City, Utah – The Alliance for a Better Utah welcomes Chase Thomas as its new Policy and Advocacy Associate Director. The position is made possible through a generous partnership with the BYU Law School and the Mary Alice Woolley Public Service Fellowship program.
Thomas’ notable resume includes graduating from Arizona State University and BYU Law School. While at BYU, he was the school’s only openly gay law student, and used his position to help change the perceptions of what it meant to be gay and LDS. During law school, Thomas interned with the ACLU of Utah and the LGBT Project of the National ACLU in New York City. Thomas also served as president of BYU’s chapter of the American Constitution Society, contributing to a more robust discussion at BYU surrounding legal and policy issues affecting Utah and the nation.
“Chase knows the issues, and how to give voice to a community that is often quiet or unheard,” stated Josh Kanter, founder of the Alliance for a Better Utah. “Better Utah is fortunate to have someone of his background and experience join our team.”
“I’m excited to join an organization with a track record of speaking out and advocating for a more balanced Utah,” stated Thomas. “I’m also grateful to BYU Law and the Mary Alice Woolley fellowship for providing the opportunity to partner with the Alliance for a Better Utah.”
For over 40 years, the Mary Alice Wooley Public Service Fellowship Program has provided BYU law students and graduates scholarships, loans, and financial support. Mary Alice was the daughter of the well-respected California Attorney, Roland Rich Woolly, and intimately involved with the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers, BYU Law School, and Primary Children’s Hospital prior to her death in 2003.
The Alliance for a Better Utah is a year-round, multi issue advocacy organization. Founded in 2011, its mission is to drive a public narrative that empowers Utah’s electorate and holds public officials accountable.
