Alliance for a Better Utah Calls for Justice for GOP Voters

The political transparency & accountability group condemns suspicious cancellation of hearing

Salt Lake City, UT – Today, the depth of the chaotic mess that was the Utah GOP Caucus in March was revealed, including a suspicious cover up that has robbed Utah Republicans of their voice in national politics. In March, less than 10% of registered Republicans in Utah had a say in who Utah GOP delegates would nominate for president. Then the hearing scheduled to review that mismanagement was canceled by Republican leaders.

Jeff Merchant, executive director for Alliance for a Better Utah, issued the following statement:

“Removing the hearing from the agenda is an insult to Utah voters generally, and Republicans specifically. Legislative leaders have shown again and again that they feel accountable to no one—especially the voters. Governments have no more sacred responsibility than ensuring the voice of the people is ensured. Republican leadership—in the party and at the state house—failed Utah.

“It could have just been a catastrophic error in user experience” said Elizabeth Hutchings, Alliance for a Better Utah Communications Director “and if voters had received a thoughtful response it might have been viewed as just that. Now you’ve robbed voters of their voice, and accountability from politicians who are sworn to represent that voice.”
