BETTER UTAH OPPOSES H.B.135, CALLS OUT REP. NOEL FOR PANDERING TO SPECIAL INTERESTS

Salt Lake City, UT – Alliance for a Better Utah announced its opposition to H.B.135, recently proposed by Representative Mike Noel (R-Kanab). This bill, which was filed without data from a panel-recommended review of the issue by the Legislature or consulting key agencies, is ill prepared and hastily presented.

“While there continue to be arguments against the principle of extraterritorial jurisdiction, most agree that allowing cities to maintain control over water quality leads to better water for hundreds of thousands along the Wasatch Front,” said Laura Boyer, Policy and Advocacy Fellow with Alliance for a Better Utah. “Stripping cities of their power is pandering to the interests of a few key people rather than helping the general public.

“Introducing this bill before consulting environmental agencies clearly indicates a disregard for environmental quality or the needs of the majority of Utahns, and instead highlights a desire to serve ranching, business, and development.”

Alliance for a Better Utah has a petition calling for Rep. Noel to withdraw H.B.135 from consideration.
