Salt Lake City, UT – In response to last week’s Salt Lake City Council meeting, where council members unanimously adopted three new municipal flags inspired by the LGBTQ+ Pride flag, Trans Pride flag, and Juneteenth Flag, Alliance for a Better Utah has created a website that sells those very flags.
ThisIsNotAPrideFlag.com is an online store and a campaign poking fun at conservative lawmakers’ fixation with attacking certain communities, while raising money for the very communities Senator Daniel McCay & Representative Trevor Lee sought to harm with HB 77.
Taylor Knuth, Executive Director for Alliance for a Better Utah, issued the following statement:
“The Utah Way is about standing up for your neighbors, not silencing them. This campaign isn’t just about flags – it’s about who gets to exist in public spaces and freedom of speech. The flags that the Utah Legislature banned are symbols of community, acceptance, and celebration; it is cruel that they chose to restrict Utahns’ freedom of expression.
We applaud Mayor Mendenhall and the Salt Lake City Council for continuing America’s long and proud history of creative resistance to government overreach.”
The website, decked out in rainbow pride colors, launched Monday with three initial offerings: The Salt Lake City “Belonging” flag, “Visibility” flag, and “Celebration” flag, which are definitely not a Pride flag, Trans Pride flag, and Juneteenth flag with the traditional Salt Lake Sego Lily in the corner.
“Pride began as a protest against government overreach and police brutality. We intend to uphold that tradition by offering our community members a way to display their displeasure at the Utah Legislature’s passage of HB 77 and show support for marginalized communities. ” says Elizabeth Hutchings, Communications Director for Alliance for a Better Utah. “We plan to expand our offerings with related items that will encourage good-natured resistance to foolish legislation and hopefully bring a little joy to people’s day.”
Proceeds from purchases on the website will be donated to local organizations supporting the LGBTQ+ community. Visit ThisIsNotAPrideFlag.com for more information or to purchase a flag.
