Statement regarding Lt. Governor’s report on AG’s election law violations

Salt Lake City — Good government group Alliance for a Better UTAH has issued the following statement after receiving the official report from the Lt. Governor’s office regarding an election law violation petition filed earlier this year:

“The Lt. Governor’s Office released to us this morning the special investigator’s report in response to an election law violation petition we filed in March of this year. The report is comprehensive and will require thorough review to fully understand the nature of the findings as well as the implications of those findings.

“In the meantime, we continue to express concern over reports that a leaked version of the special investigator’s report was somehow provided to key political insiders, and that the leaked information somehow played a role both in the timing of Attorney General John Swallow’s decision to resign and in the assumptions by which the new attorney general should be selected. This is a public process and should not be treated as if this is a personnel issue within the majority party. We encourage the Lt. Governor to forward the report to the courts to begin civil proceedings. The investigation should continue through to its legal conclusion, independent of the Attorney General’s decision to resign his office.”
