Report shows low morale in AG’s office

Salt Lake City — Alliance for a Better UTAH released today the results of a survey of employees in the Utah attorney general’s office.

The 2014 Attorney General’s Office Climate Report is part of Better UTAH’s Citizen Audit Series, designed to increase transparency and accountability within Utah’s various state agencies.

In conjunction with the report’s release, Maryann Martindale, Better UTAH executive director, has released the following statement:

“Beginning in early summer our office began to receive a number of anonymous complaints from employees in the attorney general’s office, stemming in part from frustration with a clamp down on media access in the office. In response to these concerns, we conducted a brief survey to assess the current climate in the attorney general’s office. What started as an incidental project has yielded a treasure trove of important data.

“The data generated by this survey indicates a mixture of successes and failures under Attorney General Sean Reyes’ stewardship over the past year. We hope the report will give state leaders opportunities to improve the working environment in the attorney general’s office to the benefit of all Utahns who depend upon its services. Specifically, our report suggests Reyes can improve morale by directing his efforts toward transparency and more open communication within the office. In addition, this report stresses the significance of the voices of ordinary Utahns as an important corollary to official government audits in determining the relative strengths and weaknesses of various state agencies.”
