Salt Lake City, UT – On Tuesday, June 11th, the Salt Lake County Council will vote on a resolution from Councilmember Shireen Ghorbani regarding the County’s role in supporting immigrants and immigrant communities. In anticipation of the vote, Alliance for a Better Utah and Comunidades Unidas issued their joint support for the resolution.
Luis Garza, executive director of Comunidades Unidas, gave the following statement:
“We already know the cultural and economic value that all immigrants bring to our state, and that Utahns want compassionate and smart policies regarding immigration. Because of the vast contributions from immigrants, both documented and undocumented, to our state and to Salt Lake County, we appreciate the inclusive nature of Councilwoman Ghorbani’s resolution. The warm and welcoming message sent by this resolution will be felt across our communities in a time when it is so urgently needed.”
“Kids in mixed-status households, young-adults waiting to receive DACA status, parents who have worked hard to help their children achieve the American dream–tens of thousands of them across our state will benefit from knowing their neighbors welcome them. We hope the County Council will vote in favor of this resolution.”
On March 19th, the Council declined to take a vote on reaffirming the Utah Compact. In that meeting, Councilmember Steve DeBry announced he would not support the Compact because it did not discriminate between documented and undocumented immigrants. Debry, who is also the Police Chief for the Unified Police Department Millcreek Precinct, said, “In law enforcement I see the drugs, the carnage, the mules, the sex trafficking and everything else from illegal immigration or illegal aliens coming into our country. Lauren Simpson, policy director for Alliance for a Better Utah, said the following:
“Vulgar anti-immigrant rhetoric is always out of line, but it’s even more alarming when it comes from someone who represents the community as an elected official and holds a position of authority in law enforcement. These attitudes damage our communities by perpetuating false ideas about who immigrants are and why they have chosen to make Utah their home. We should be working toward compassionate policies to make our communities stronger, not villainize its most vulnerable members.”
The Resolution will be discussed by the Committee of the Whole at 1:30pm, and again at the County Council Meeting at 4:00pm on Tuesday, June 11th. The 1:30pm meeting will take place at the Salt Lake Council Chambers, 2001 S. State Street, Council Chambers, room N2-800, while the 4:00pm meeting will take place in room N1-110.

Salt Lake City, UT – El martes 11 de junio, el Consejo del Condado de Salt Lake votará una resolución de la Concejala Shireen Ghorbani con respecto al papel del Condado en el apoyo a los inmigrantes y las comunidades de inmigrantes. Anticipándose a la votación, Alliance for a Better Utah y Comunidades Unidas emitieron su apoyo conjunto para la resolución.
Luis Garza, director ejecutivo de Comunidades Unidas, hizo la siguiente declaración:
“Ya sabemos el valor cultural y económico que todos los inmigrantes aportan a nuestro estado, y que los habitantes de Utah quieren políticas compasivas e inteligentes con respecto a la inmigración. El 19 de marzo, el Consejo se negó a votar para reafirmar el Compacto de Utah. En esa reunión, el Concejal Steve DeBry anunció que no apoyaría el Pacto porque no discriminaba entre inmigrantes documentados e indocumentados. Debry, quien también es el Jefe de Policía del Unified Police Department de Millcreek Precinct, dijo, “En la aplicación de la ley veo que las drogas, la carnicería, las mulas, el tráfico sexual y todo lo demás de la inmigración ilegal o los extranjeros ilegales llegan a nuestro país. La resolución será discutida por el Comité Plenario a la 1:30 pm, y nuevamente en la Reunión del Consejo del Condado a las 4:00 pm el martes 11 de junio. La reunión de la 1:30 pm tendrá lugar en las Cámaras del Consejo de Salt Lake, 2001 S. State Street, Cámaras del Consejo, sala N2-800, mientras que la reunión de las 4:00 pm tendrá lugar en la sala N1-110.
