PRESS RELEASE
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: April 17, 2020
Salt Lake City, UT – In response to the Utah House passing S.B. 3004, Covid-19 Health and Economic Response Act, Lauren Simpson, policy director for Alliance for a Better Utah, issued the following statement:
“S.B. 3004 is an example of a solution in search of a problem, and a legislative body that wants to expand its power. Not only is it an embarrassing power grab, the commission could duplicate and even undermine current response efforts already under way.
“During debate on the bill, some members of the House repeatedly brought up “reopening” the economy prematurely. While everyone is eager for a return to normalcy, let’s be clear: there is no economic health without public health. The Governor is doing his job by addressing the health crisis, and the Legislature should stop trying to get in the way. This bill could result in bad or delayed decisions being made during a moment when nimble and definitive actions are what will save lives.”
