2022 Session Week Five

Here is week 5 of Utah’s Legislative Session update! Things are moving quickly up here on Capitol Hill as lawmakers rush to move bills through the process with a little over nine days left until sine die.

Until then, we have some action alerts for you and updates on some of the bills we are watching right now. If you’d like to receive more regular updates along with actions you can take to influence the legislative process, sign up for our daily email updates

As always, we thank you for your continued support and all that you do to make Utah an even better place.

Support Transgender Students

HB11 places hurdles on transgender students’ ability to participate in school sports by requiring them to prove to a new commission that their physical characteristics allow them to be eligible to play in “gender-designated sports.” HB11 passed the House last week, so email your state senator and ask them to vote “NO” on HB11!

Say No to School Vouchers

Private school vouchers divert money that could otherwise be used for our public school children to privately run, for-profit institutions where there is no taxpayer accountability. Schemes like this have been tried in other states with no measurable increase in student achievement. Even though Governor Cox has threatened to veto the bill, the sponsor of HB331, Rep. Candice Pierucci, says she is working on a new version of the bill that will be voted on by the House. Use this form from the Utah Education Association to contact your lawmaker and ask them to say no to private vouchers and support public schools!
