Press Release: Senator Lee’s Predictions of Violence Lack Vision and Sow Division

PRESS RELEASE
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: November 16, 2018

Salt Lake City, UT – In his speech to the Federalist Society yesterday, Senator Mike Lee made some alarming comments about the status of our country and its future. In a “my way or the highway” manner, he stated that the country must ultimately choose between federalism and violence. Today, progressive good government organization, Alliance for a Better Utah, slammed the statements as a part of the very problem Lee decried in his speech.

“Every time political leaders discuss violence as a possibility, it increases the likelihood that a maniacal follower of theirs might consider that an endorsement of violence,” said Chase Thomas, executive director of Better Utah. “Baseless fear-mongering has no place within our communities, and is inexcusable coming from our elected officials.

“Yes, we are in divisive times. But in light of recent events, we don’t need grim predictions from Lee that suggest the only way to avoid further violence is by ending programs that have helped millions of people and contributed to the strength and greatness of our country. What we do need right now is leadership with a bold vision of unity to carry us through these challenges.”
