The Second Amendment to the Constitution guarantees American citizens the right to keep and bear arms. Today, the creation of laws governing gun ownership, use, and safety has become a hotly debated topic. We believe that there is a middle ground between those who support extremely strict gun laws and those who support minimal regulation. Better UTAH does not support excessive limits; rather, our position is to support our Second Amendment rights while ensuring that the use, ownership, licensing, and carrying of guns are regulated reasonably to help protect the public. For instance, we support the enforcement of a “no gun zone” near Utah schools. Although critics may argue that such a regulation could make an “inadvertent criminal” out of a person who accidentally walks through the zone carrying a firearm, we believe that the failure to implement such a law would create an unnecessary risk for our children. Ultimately, we ask lawmakers simply to make public safety a priority in the creation of gun laws, working to prevent gun crimes and violence while still upholding and protecting the Constitutional rights of gun owners.
