Salt Lake City, UT – Yesterday, all four members of Utah’s federal delegation voted to change rules of the House of Representatives in such a way that would hobble the independent Office of Congressional Ethics. Josh Kanter, board chair of Alliance for a Better Utah, issued the following statement in response:
“It is striking that among Congress’s first official acts of 2017, every member of Utah’s federal House delegation voted in favor of weakening House ethics rules. If there is bipartisan agreement that the Office of Congressional Ethics is in need of reform as our delegation claims, then reform it on a bipartisan basis. Deciding to pull the teeth of ethics oversight in a closed, GOP-only caucus smells of bad judgment and betrays the trust of the people who lawmakers represent. If this is an indication of how Congress and our delegation will be governing for the next two years, we urge all Utahns to be vigilant in monitoring the actions of their representatives.”
